21 ways to accelerate performance

“The new Momentum Series complements our current executive education offerings,” says Mark Kizilos, the Carlson School’s assistant dean of Executive Education. “These new programs feature a shorter format, highly targeted topics, and experienced teachers. The classes are designed to provide participants with actionable insights on focused subjects. Our debut series of 21 programs offers a broad range of relevant topics that can arm executives and managers with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully navigate the current business environment.”

Kizilos, who has more than 15 years of experience in corporate learning and development, is teaching a half- day course, “Tools to Accelerate Learning from Experience,” on June 9. “While most of us would agree that experience is the best teacher, not all experiences are equally developmental,” he says. “In this class, I will show participants how to identify highly developmental experiences and make the most of them. I will provide simple techniques to maximize learning from experience that they can apply to their individual development – and potentially to the development plans of their employees and organizations.” During the class, Kizilos will draw on interviews he conducted with 100 successful executives on their highly developmental experiences.

When opportunity knocks – know how to make the most of it

Another timely Momentum Series program is “Evaluating and Developing Your New Business Opportunity,” taught by Dileep Rao on May 22. Rao, an entrepreneurial finance columnist for Forbes.com and a senior lecturer in the Carlson School’s strategic management and organization department, has written more than three books on how to finance a business. His course is targeted to entrepreneurs and corporate executives involved in finding new business opportunities.

“In this class, I will discuss how to evaluate new business opportunities, especially ones without historical trend data, and I will show participants how to identify strategies to leverage these opportunities,” Rao says. “Participants will gain critical tools, techniques and tips for assessing potential, addressing management issues, and creating financial projections. We also will discuss the consequences of structuring an opportunity to fit an existing business as well as strategies for attaining better results.”

Jump-start your personal momentum

The Momentum Series offers several courses to boost your personal performance. One example is “Personal Operations Management” taught by Arthur Hill, consultant and operations and management science professor at the Carlson School, on May 14. Using “lean” principles, he will provide participants with tools and techniques for managing the endless e-mails, voice mails, meetings, piles of paper, and task lists juggled every day.

“In today’s business environment, senior executives and middle managers are deluged with information,” Hill says. “This workshop will help participants identify 12 common problems and learn practical, proven solutions to boost success and reduce stress and overload. Such ‘lean’ approaches are heavily used today in manufacturing and service companies. When applied personally, they boost your focus and enable you to meet your commitments more faithfully.”
