GBCC Career Tip of the Week
Joining professional organizations and being active in those organizations can yield a bounty of career benefits. Not only can you join at a reduced student rate but also obtain information on current trends, leads on anticipated openings, access to current job postings, find mentors, and receive the association's trade journal, newsletter or magazine that covers that specific field in depth.

  • The Internet Public Library offers a guide to web sites of prominent organizations and associations at http://www.ipl.org/div/aon/
  • Additionally the UM-Twin Cities Libraries has a subscription to Associations Unlimited which you can use online by typing it into "Search and Find" on their homepage http://www.lib.umn.edu/  These databases contain profiles of approximately 460,000 international and U.S. national, regional, state, and local  membership organizations in all fields. A recent search for Minneapolis yielded 429 results.
  • The Wilson Library has a hard copy of the Directory of Minnesota Business and Professional Associations in the Business Reference section. This resource contains the names and contact numbers of industry associations in the Twin Cities.

After joining an association, access the organization's membership directory so you can tap into the hidden job market!
